Ranchi red alert as depression brings heavy rain

Ranchi Meteorological Centre issued a red alert for Ranchi, Latehar, Chatra, Hazaribag and Ramgarh after a depression formed over Jharkhand and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal on Tuesday. Waterlogging was reported in Upper Bazaar, Peace Road, Kantatoli and near the railway station. Ranchi Municipal Corporation deployed super sucker machines and excavators to clear clogged city storm drains.

- IMD placed the system about 100 kilometres northeast of Ranchi on 18 August morning, moving west-northwest.
- Ward 13 councillor Pawan Tirkey said Kantatoli's low-lying stretches flood in long rain and asked for immediate drain clearing.
- PTPS later opened gates 4 and 5 in the evening, discharging about 264 cusecs to hold the reservoir below the danger mark.

- Down To Earth reported the same system also raised heavy-rain alerts for parts of Bihar, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and eastern Madhya Pradesh.
- Some Jharkhand pockets were forecast to receive more than 204.5 mm, the threshold used for extremely heavy rain warnings.
- Yellow alerts remained for several southern and eastern districts, with lightning and gusty winds listed alongside the rain.
