Assam to dismiss government employees practising polygamy

The Assam government proposed amending its 1964 service rules to dismiss any government employee found to be practising polygamy, The Hindu reported. Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah also said polygamist men would be ineligible for state welfare schemes, citing gender justice. Assam had passed a Uniform Civil Code Bill in May primarily to ban polygamy.
