Tarapith hotel fire kills nine including Meghalaya family

A fire at Hotel Bideshini in Tarapith, Birbhum, killed nine people after starting around 4.30 a.m. on 17 August. Five members of one Garo Hills family, including two children, died. Three others were from Alipurduar. Forty-three people were in the hotel; 34 were discharged. Police detained owner Kalyan Pal and another person. Guests had come for Shravan.
