India maps 198 million kL smart protein capacity
The Hindu BusinessLine··4d ago
India has 198 million kilolitres of biomanufacturing capacity relevant to smart proteins, a Sathguru and GFI India study says. Researchers mapped 478 facilities across nine segments and 17 states. Of the total, 26.43 million kL is idle today. They say spare fermenter capacity in food and biopharma plants could speed biomass and precision fermentation work.

What It Means For You
- Using 20 percent of precision-fermentation idle capacity for lactoferrin could cover about $635 million in estimated 2025 global market needs, the study models.
- Using 0.2 percent of biomass-relevant idle capacity could address about $347 million in 2025 yeast protein market size.
- GFI India's Sneha Singh said existing Indian capacity could offer more cost-effective scaling for food and nutrition markets.
What's Happening
- About 7,737 kL of idle capacity across CDMOs, biopharmaceuticals and enzymes is relevant for precision fermentation.
- Five food-grade industries hold 2.74 million kL of idle capacity relevant to biomass fermentation.
- The report is titled Mapping India's biomanufacturing potential for smart proteins.
Why Idle Capacity Matters
- Global smart protein biomanufacturing still faces high capital needs and limited commercial-scale infrastructure, Singh said.
- Co-author Ravi Audichya said fermentation can help address protein insufficiency with lower-cost nutrition.
- Retrofitting needs vary by industry, shaping short- and long-term conversion paths.
