Census 2027 form asks parents religion and birthplace

The Census 2027 population-enumeration schedule, live in Ladakh and snow-bound parts of three other States, asks for the religion, date of birth and village-level place of birth of both parents. The Hindu reported the fields on 18 August 2026. Respondents can also record if a parent was born outside India. Six listed religions sit beside a column for other religion.

What It Means For You
- If you live in Ladakh or snow-bound parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh or Uttarakhand, the population-enumeration form is already open on the self-enumeration portal from 17 August.
- Anyone filling the household schedule will be asked for both parents' religion and place of birth down to village, not only for the person being counted.
- If you hold Aadhaar, a voter ID, a passport or a driving licence, the notified list includes those numbers if available, along with mobile number and bank-account count.

- Door-to-door enumeration in the early States is scheduled from 1 to 30 September 2026.
- Nationwide population enumeration remains listed for February 2027.
What Changed From The 2011 Population Schedule
- Census 2011 asked 29 population-enumeration questions; the 2027 list has 40, including 13 new data fields.
- Other first-time items named in reporting include permanent residential address, place of COVID-19 vaccination, and father's and mother's particulars as separate heads.
- The form also lets respondents record a parent's birthplace if the parent was born outside India.
