Odisha faces another wet spell after floods

On 23 August 2026, the India Meteorological Department said a fresh low-pressure area is likely over the north Bay of Bengal within 24 hours. Isolated northern and western districts may receive 64.5 to 204.4 mm of rain over the next six days. Close to one million people were already affected in floods across six districts.

- Anyone fishing off the Odisha coast was told not to go to sea for two days while winds of 35 to 45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph, are expected.

- The office said an upper-air cyclonic circulation already sits over the north Bay off the West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts, and the low is expected to form over the same region.
- As of Saturday, the Mahanadi, Brahmani, Baitarani, Budhabalanga, Subarnarekha and Jalaka were all flowing below the danger mark.
- OdishaBytes said later orange warnings also cover Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj on some days through 27 August, after two comparatively dry days had helped rivers fall.
Why A New Bay Low Follows Receding Floods
- The six districts already counted in the million-person flood tally sit mainly on the northern river system that rose earlier in August.
- A yellow warning for thunder and gusty wind has also been used for interior and coastal districts, not only the five named for very heavy rain.
- Chhattisgarh is on the same watch because the same Bay system can push rain west after it forms, not because Odisha's rivers have risen again.
