Goa asks Supreme Court to raise Tejpal sentence

The Goa government on 18 August 2026 moved the Supreme Court seeking life imprisonment for former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal in the 2013 rape case. It does not seek to reopen the Bombay High Court's 6 August conviction. That bench had set aside a 2021 acquittal and awarded 10 years' rigorous imprisonment. Tejpal has said he will appeal the conviction.

- The complainant, who cannot be named under Indian law, alleged assault in a hotel lift during a Tehelka event in Goa in November 2013.
- Tejpal spent about seven months in custody after his 2013 arrest before the Supreme Court granted bail in 2014. That period is to be set off against the sentence.
