Two Bengal hotel fires kill 18 in three days

Nine people died in a Tarapith hotel fire on 17 August 2026 and nine more died on 19 August at Shikha Inn on Kolkata's Mirza Ghalib Street. Eight of the Kolkata dead were identified as Bangladeshi nationals and one as a Jharkhand resident. Paul said about 10 guest houses ran in that building. The state ordered a hotel fire-safety audit.
