Railways rolls out AI freight wagon checks

The Indian Express··27 Sept

Northeast Frontier Railway and IIT Guwahati developed Project DRISHTI, an AI system to inspect freight wagon doors, locks and seals. NFR CPRO Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said high-speed cameras capture wagons as trains pass monitoring points. The software identifies wagon numbers and flags possible seal or lock irregularities. Officials said the tools aim to reduce slower manual night and weather checks.

What It Means For You

  • Freight wagon door, lock and seal checks can be recorded digitally at designated points.
  • RPF and commercial staff are expected to get faster alerts on possible irregularities.
  • NFR says quicker detection is intended to reduce delays in freight operations.

What's Happening

  • Project DRISHTI combines AI, cameras, lighting and secure networking for wayside inspection.
  • As a train passes, images are analysed for door, lock and seal condition.
  • Sharma said technology-enabled monitoring is expected to strengthen freight checks without depending only on manual inspection.

Why NFR is prioritising freight seals

  • NFR said freight matters especially where geography makes road transport difficult.
  • Earlier inspections of doors, locks and seals were largely manual and slower at night or in bad weather.
  • The rollout was announced as an NFR and IIT Guwahati collaboration.
