Congress holds SIR protests across Maharashtra districts

The Hindu··29 Sept

Congress held protests across Maharashtra on Monday demanding removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over electoral rolls. Rallies took place outside collectorates in Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Kolhapur, Solapur, Thane, Amravati and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. An Indian Express report said commissioners raised objections at least 14 times to roll decisions. The Election Commission said its decisions were unanimous.

What It Means For You

  • Memoranda submitted to collectors sought Kumar's removal and action against him.
  • Opposition leaders including Rahul Gandhi have sought action after the reported internal notes.
  • The Special Intensive Revision process remains central to the party's electoral-roll complaints.

What's Happening

  • Congress workers in Amravati paraded an effigy of Kumar on a donkey, the party said.
  • Former minister Satej Patil led the Kolhapur protest.
  • MP Praniti Shinde joined the agitation in Solapur.

What the Internal Notes Alleged

  • Objections concerned voter additions, deletions and control over the voter database.
  • Some internal notes described particular steps as unauthorised or illegal, the report said.
  • The ECI argued focusing on individual notes omitted the wider body of approved decisions.
