UGC-NET retest delays PhD plans in three subjects

The National Testing Agency will re-conduct UGC-NET June 2026 papers in English, Commerce and Sociology on 9 and 10 September after a committee found factual, translation and typographical errors. Telegraph India reported that the delay has disrupted PhD applications, where the NET score carries 70 percent weight. Candidates of the three subjects will not pay a second fee.

What It Means For You
- If you sat UGC-NET English, Commerce or Sociology in June 2026, you will take a free retest on 9 or 10 September; city and admit-card details are to be posted later.
- Anyone in the other 84 subjects can note JRF allotment and Assistant Professor e-certificates are not being held back for this retest.
- If you are drafting a PhD proposal, admissions still count NET at 70 percent and the interview at 30 percent, so the September paper now sits on that calendar.

Why The Agency Said Dropping Questions Was Not Enough
- The committee cited misspelt scholars' names, garbled book titles, grammar faults and questions repeated from older papers.
- NTA Director Abhishek Singh said the three papers had to be held again in the interest of a fair exam.
- The number qualifying for Assistant Professor will be 6 percent of those who appeared in June or in the retest, whichever is higher.
