Telangana group seeks 18% budget share for education
The Hindu··5d ago
Telangana People's Front wrote to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on October 7, 2026 seeking three urgent education interventions. It asked for a Fee Regulatory Commission law, stronger public schools modelled on Arutla, and at least 18 percent of the State budget for education. It reminded Congress of a 2023 pledge to raise spending from 6.5 percent to 15 percent.

What It Means For You
- Private school fee disputes would go to a proposed independent regulator if enacted.
- Parents' committees are cast as the vehicle to replicate the Arutla school model.
- Budget talks will show whether education climbs toward TPF's 18 percent floor.
What's Happening
- TPF includes former bureaucrats such as ex-Education Commission chair Akunuri Murali.
- Its Vidya Bus Yatra ran September 15 to 29 across 10 erstwhile districts.
- Members visited 20 government schools and slept on school premises in Badi Nidra.
What the Letter Demands
- One demand is legislation to stop arbitrary private fee hikes and extra charges.
- Another is to institutionalise the Telangana Public Schools programme by statute.
- Gurukul welfare spending would stay outside the education budget share sought.
