Depression over Bay keeps north Odisha on red alert

North Odisha remained under flood pressure on 17 August after a Bay of Bengal low intensified into a depression. IMD issued a red warning of extremely heavy rain for Balasore, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj through 18 August. Chief Secretary Anu Garg said about five lakh people were affected. Schools stayed closed and government leave was cancelled.

- IMD also issued an orange warning for 11 Odisha districts including Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara and Cuttack.
- Utkal University postponed some 17 August undergraduate examinations citing transport disruption.
