Tamil Nadu CM raises delimitation NEET and Cauvery with Shah

On 20 August 2026 at the 31st Southern Zonal Council, Chief Minister Joseph Vijay told Home Minister Amit Shah that population-based delimitation could cut the South's share of Lok Sabha seats. He asked for a legislative assurance that states which stabilised population would not lose their percentage of parliamentary representation as the 1971 freeze ends. Vijay is the council's vice-chairman.

Why Delimitation Seats NEET And Cauvery Share One Table
- Lok Sabha seat shares have been frozen on the 1971 Census. When that freeze lifts, states with faster population growth would gain if seats follow headcount alone.
- Tamil Nadu has long opposed NEET and used Class 12 ranks for medical admission before the national test was imposed.
- Cauvery awards and Supreme Court orders already exist; Vijay's point was implementation for the lower-riparian state, not a new tribunal.
