Shillong student bike rally turns violent, three leaders held

On 19 August 2026, a Khasi Students Union black-flag bike rally in Shillong turned violent, police said. At least 31 vehicles were damaged and two government vehicles were set ablaze. Statues of Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at the Relief and Rehabilitation Colony were vandalised. SP Vivek Syiem said stone-pelting was reported across the city.

What The Five-Point Charter Had Asked The State
- The charter covered indigenous rights, employment, migrant-worker regulation, MPSC and DSC recruitment, and objections to nurse recruitment at NEIGRIHMS.
- The union had also demanded that a recruitment process in East Jaintia Hills be declared null and void.
- Police and security personnel were deployed in several parts of the city after the violence; most shops remained closed during the agitation.
