NHAI starts barrier-free tolling on NH-179B
The Indian Express··1 Oct
NHAI has launched Tamil Nadu’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow tolling system at Paranur Toll Plaza on the Tambaram-Tindivanam stretch of NH-179B. Vehicles pass without stopping as ANPR and FASTag collect tolls electronically. NHAI said users need a working FASTag with enough balance to avoid electronic notices. Similar systems already run in Gujarat, Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan and Haryana.

What It Means For You
- Drivers on the Tambaram-Tindivanam section no longer need to halt at a barrier for toll payment.
- A functional FASTag with sufficient balance is required to avoid an electronic notice.
- NHAI says the setup can cut congestion, travel time and fuel use at the plaza.
What's Happening
- Automatic Number Plate Recognition works with FASTag-based electronic collection at Paranur.
- NHAI is rolling out MLFF in phases at other National Highway plazas.
- Sites already live include Chorayasi in Gujarat and Mundka-Bakkarwala on Delhi’s UER-II.
Where MLFF Already Runs
- Rajasthan’s Delhi-Jaipur NH-48 has MLFF at Shahjahanpur, Daulatpura and Manoharpura.
- Haryana’s Gharaunda plaza on the Panipat-Jalandhar NH-44 stretch also uses the system.
- NHAI says MLFF lowers plaza operating costs and reduces human intervention in collection.
