The Indian Express··3 Oct
The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited completed a 480-metre Sabarmati River bridge on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor in Ahmedabad. The bridge stands about 36 metres high, equal to a 12-storey building, and sits between the Sabarmati and Ahmedabad stations. With this span finished, 18 of 21 planned river bridges in Gujarat are complete.

What It Means For You
- Travellers tracking the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor now have another major Ahmedabad structure marked complete by NHSRCL.
- The bridge lies about 1 km from Sabarmati station and 4 km from Ahmedabad station on the alignment.
- Gujarat still has 3 of 21 planned river bridges left after this Sabarmati completion.
What's Happening
- Eight circular piers of 6 to 6.5 metres diameter support the bridge, with four in the riverbed.
- Spans run 50 to 76 metres, longer than the roughly 40-metre spans used on many other corridor river bridges.
- Builders used the balanced cantilever method, casting 23 segments per span and joining them with post-tensioning.
Why the Piers Are So Tall
- NHSRCL said existing infrastructure forced greater pier height, including the Ahmedabad-Delhi railway line about 14.8 metres above ground.
- The Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor is planned for 25 river bridges: 21 in Gujarat and 4 in Maharashtra.
- Longer spans were chosen to cut the number of piers inside the Sabarmati waterway.
