Delhi HC sets 29 October hearing in Ganguly plea

Livemint·

The Delhi High Court on Friday asked the makers of the film Doosra to answer Sourav Ganguly's personality rights plea. Justice Vinod Kumar said interim relief would be considered only after they reply. The court also directed them to arrange a screening of the movie, released on 23 October. The next hearing is scheduled for 29 October.

What It Means For You

  • Doosra remains in theatres while the court decides whether any interim limits on exhibition are needed.
  • Viewers may still see the film before the 29 October hearing resolves the personality rights dispute.
  • A parallel Ganguly biopic from Luv Films LLP is also a party to the suit.

What's Happening

  • The vacation bench issued summons to the film's producers, director, and distributor.
  • Defence counsel said the story is fictional and that clip permissions were obtained from rights holders.
  • Plaintiffs argued a stay remains possible even after theatrical release.

What Ganguly's lawsuit claims

  • Ganguly's plea cites references to his 2002 NatWest Series final captaincy and Lord's balcony celebration.
  • Makers argue a player cannot claim personality rights over that 2002 series footage.
  • The high court had declined on Thursday to halt the film's theatrical release.
