Supreme Court seeks Raman medical report by October 12

Hindustan Times··3d ago

The Supreme Court on Friday directed Kerala to file the latest medical report on captive elephant Uttoly Raman by October 12. Justices Dipankar Datta and Sheel Nagu asked why the state affidavit omitted steps taken after the June 9 custody order. The Bench told Kerala to comply with that order. It also barred caretaker Krishnankutty from touching the elephant.

What It Means For You

  • Kerala has to place a current medical inspection report on record by October 12.
  • The court said the June 9 custody order is to be followed in letter and spirit.
  • Krishnankutty is not to be allowed contact with Raman, the Bench directed.

What's Happening

  • State counsel cited assembly elections as one reason for delay after June 9.
  • The Bench rejected that explanation and called non-disclosure a compliance failure.
  • When counsel said the elephant was already in government custody, judges asked for the date.

Why Custody Was Ordered

  • On June 9 the court ordered Kerala to take custody after Krishnankutty breached an undertaking.
  • An August 6, 2025 undertaking had barred religious or commercial use of Raman.
  • A state inspection found the elephant had been taken to a temple festival near Chavakkad.
