Jharkhand cancels JSSC exam after student protests

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced cancellation of the JSSC Combined Graduate Level examination after a four-hour Cabinet meeting, 24 days into a student sit-in at Ranchi's Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium. All exams since 2014 by blacklisted firm TSR Data Processing Private Limited were also cancelled. A committee under IAS officer Amitabh Kaushal will suggest exam reforms.

What It Means For You
- If you cleared JSSC-CGL and joined a department, appointed candidates have said they object to the entire exam being cancelled rather than action against those found guilty.

What's Happening
- The sit-in began on 25 July. On 12 August Soren had already cancelled the 14th JPSC civil services exam, which did not end the protest.
- Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote asking Soren to meet the students. The Cabinet then cancelled JSSC-CGL as well.
- State CID searched the JSSC office and made an arrest around the same period, The Hindu reported.
Why Two Groups Are Now On Opposite Sides
- Assistant Section Officer Kaushal Kumar, among those already appointed, asked what crime the selected candidates had committed and sought a CBI or independent probe instead of a blanket cancellation.
- A Congress delegation met Soren and welcomed the cancellations as protecting students seeking fair recruitment.
- An editorial in the Indian Express warned that livelihoods of those already in posts were at stake once results and appointments were wiped.
