May US job cuts topped 97,000, highest since 2020

Moneycontrol cited Challenger, Gray and Christmas data showing US employers announced over 97,000 job cuts in May 2026, the highest May total since the Covid-19 pandemic began. Layoffs rose for three straight months from 48,307 in February to 83,387 in April. AI was cited as the primary reason for nearly 40 percent of May reductions.
