Supreme Court says bar independence is as crucial as judiciary

The Supreme Court on July 7, 2026, held that independence of lawyers is as important as judicial independence and forms the foundation of rule of law and democracy. A bench headed by Justice P.S. Narasimha directed the Bar Council of India to undertake a comprehensive performance audit of disciplinary mechanisms. The court proposed a National Legal Academy for advocates.
