What It Means For You
- Protests in Delhi are now designated for Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in Shahdara instead of Jantar Mantar.
- A detailed and revised SOP for organising protests at the three venues will be issued separately, the circular said.
- The High Court hears the closure petition on Tuesday, October 13. The petitioner's lawyer argued that no alternative venue had been designated by the authorities.
What's Happening
- The circular said the Ministry of Home Affairs had constituted a committee to examine alternative venues. Jantar Mantar was de-notified based on its recommendations.
- The petitions were mentioned before a bench of Acting Chief Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre and Justice Sanjay Sharma on Monday morning, October 12.
- A separate PIL by NSUI president Vinod Jakhar seeks an independent and time-bound investigation into alleged assaults on protesters on October 10.
Where the Dispute Began
- Hundreds took to the streets on October 10 and 11 after the Cockroach Janta Party called a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
- The Delhi High Court said the Supreme Court has called on the Union to file its affidavits in the matter.
- Hindustan Times reports that Jantar Mantar has been a hub of youth-led protests since June this year.
