Court names five-member panel on NEET protest force

On 20 August 2026, the Supreme Court named a five-member enquiry committee headed by former judge R Subhash Reddy to examine alleged police excesses during NEET-UG marches. Members include former Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Ravi Shankar Jha, former Delhi High Court judge Shalinder Kaur, former CBI director Rishi Kumar Shukla and retired Meghalaya DGP LR Bishnoi.

What's Happening
- The names were made public on 20 August. Some reports say the underlying order was signed earlier, on 18 July, by a Bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant.
- Delhi Police has said force was used after parts of the crowd tried to breach barricades and resorted to stone-pelting.
- The committee will also examine use of prohibitory orders and Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as listed in the brief.
What This Enquiry Is And Is Not
- An HPEC is not a criminal trial. It collects facts for the court. Prosecutions, if any, would still need a separate legal process.
- Pellet guns fire metallic kinetic projectiles. Petitioners asked the panel to consider a ban because of lasting bodily harm.
- The 20 July events were part of student protests over alleged NEET paper leaks, including a Cockroach Janta Party march in central Delhi.
