At least ten people were killed and several others remained trapped after an under-construction NHPC Teesta Stage VI hydroelectric project tunnel collapsed in Sikkim's Namchi district on July 20. Officials said a methane gas explosion during efforts to release accumulated gas at Samardung in Jholungey triggered a landslide blocking the tunnel exit and trapping workers inside.
