Co-author explains 15,800 India heat death estimate
Hindustan Times··15h ago
University of Chicago Energy Policy Institute co-author Emily Grover-Kopec told PTI a report projecting about 15,800 extra heat deaths in India over six months used seasonal forecasts and temperature-mortality models. She cited European Centre data and 2022 Quarterly Journal of Economics work. It said super El Nino could lift global land temperatures 1.2 degrees Celsius above normal.

What It Means For You
- State heat action plans and hospital surge capacity are the main levers officials cite for cutting deaths.
- The estimate is a projection, and Abhiyant Tiwari told PTI mortality numbers should be treated cautiously pre peer review.
- A 1.2 degree Celsius land anomaly would resemble warming climate models project over 20 years.
What's Happening
- Grover-Kopec directs climate and energy practice at the Rhodium Group.
- The team used a 1996-2025 baseline period, described as a common 30-year climate reference.
- Harshal Ramesh Salve of AIIMS said the report reinforces known heat mortality risks in South Asia.
How the seasonal mortality model works
- Earlier work with the same formula projected deaths using long-run climate model scenarios.
- ECMWF seasonal forecasts sat in the middle of available temperature anomaly projections Grover-Kopec cited.
- Tiwari said India's heat action experience offers lessons for the Global South.
