West Bengal withdraws SC appeal on 77 OBC castes

The West Bengal government on July 14 withdrew its Supreme Court appeal against a May 2024 Calcutta High Court verdict striking inclusion of 77 communities, including 75 Muslim groups, from the state OBC list. The BJP-led cabinet decided not to pursue the Mamata-era challenge. The high court had found religion was the sole criterion for granting OBC status between April and September 2010.
