The Supreme Court declared refusal of lawyers to represent accused was illegal, unconstitutional and against professional ethics. In 2019 the Uttarakhand High Court declared resolutions against representation null and void. In 2002 the Supreme Court ruled lawyer boycotts amounted to contempt of court. A 2010 appeal stated every person has the right to be defended regardless of how society perceives them.
