WFP cuts Gaza aid from 1.6 million people

BBC News·

The World Food Programme said funding cuts will reduce Gaza aid recipients from 1.6 million to 1.1 million. Hot meals from community kitchens will fall from 250,000 to 150,000 each day. Flour bags and ration boxes will reach 600,000 people each month, down from 1.1 million. Director Shaun Hughes said the cuts are financial, not because needs or access fell.

What It Means For You

  • People relying on WFP hot meals in Gaza may see daily kitchen portions fall from 250,000 to 150,000.
  • Families near the Yellow Line are told meals may arrive every other day instead of daily.
  • Monthly flour bags and ration boxes will cover 600,000 people instead of 1.1 million.

What's Happening

  • WFP said overall recipients in Gaza will drop from 1.6 million to 1.1 million because of funding shortages.
  • Shaun Hughes said the cuts are not due to lower needs or blocked access.
  • The agency says it needs $450m to keep critical operations for the next six months.

What Aid Continues For Now

  • WFP says it can still support bakeries that provide one-third of Gaza's bread needs.
  • Nutritional assistance continues for about 300,000 women and children, plus snacks for some 200,000 children.
  • In the West Bank, WFP assistance continues for some 200,000 Palestinians after a September cut.
