Delhi approves Rs 2,500 monthly aid for women

The Delhi cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, approved the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana, offering Rs 2,500 monthly assistance to eligible women. Women aged 21 to 60 with annual family income up to Rs 2.5 lakh can apply once the portal opens on August 1. The government has budgeted Rs 5,110 crore for the scheme in 2026-27.

A Promise Delayed By More Than A Year
- The scheme was originally approved on March 8, 2025 as the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana but was not rolled out that financial year.
- Prime Minister Modi had called it 'Modi ki guarantee' during campaigning and said benefits would start by March 8, 2025.
- The scheme also encourages women to enrol children in school, obtain APAAR and ABHA IDs, and join self help groups.
