Supreme Court halts High Court assets case against Gandhi

The Supreme Court on 17 August ordered the Allahabad High Court to defer a disproportionate-assets case against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi until further orders. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant said courts must follow principles of natural justice before directing an inquiry. The High Court had listed the matter for 20 August.

What The High Court Had Directed

- On 20 July it expressed dissatisfaction with the CBI affidavit and asked a senior officer to file a fresh progress note.
- Gandhi's petition said the High Court ordered an ED money-laundering inquiry without a predicate offence being registered.
