Supreme Court pulls up Maharashtra over trial delays

The Supreme Court on July 10 called it disturbing that Maharashtra opposes bail tooth and nail yet fails to conduct criminal trials without undue delay, The Hindu reported. Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Sheel Nagu directed the state to file an affidavit explaining prolonged pendency and disclose any policy to prevent undertrials remaining in custody due to institutional limitations.
