CJP leaders move Delhi HC over 2-day custody extension

Hindustan Times·

CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka on Tuesday moved the Delhi High Court against a two-day custody extension. A Special Executive Magistrate extended custody on Monday after their arrest for trespassing at de-notified Jantar Mantar. They were first remanded for five days. Advocate Abhik Chimni filed the petition. Ratna Singh of CJP sought an urgent night hearing.

What It Means For You

  • Das and Ranka remain in custody while the High Court petition is heard.
  • The SEM gave them two days to file written submissions with a copy to the investigating officer.
  • Delhi Police sought further custody, saying release could disrupt peace and tranquility.

What's Happening

  • The SEM order said they deliberately breached October 11 bonds and showed habitual protest at de-notified areas.
  • Chimni told HT there was no evidence they posed a public-order threat.
  • Founder Abhijeet Dipke said Das is 26-27 and Ranka is 30.

Why They Were Held

  • Police said the two mobilised a protest at Jantar Mantar after it was de-notified as a protest site.
  • Police also argued they had earlier permissions tied to conditions they allegedly failed to honour.
  • Ratna Singh called the custody extension an attempt to stifle dissenting voices.
