Dibrugarh to ship 1,080 tonnes of methanol to Bangladesh

The Hindu BusinessLine··28 Sept

Dibrugarh is set to resume international cargo on the Brahmaputra, with two vessels carrying 1,080 tonnes of methanol to Bangladesh. The methanol from Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited at Namrup will leave Bogibeel inland water port. Each vessel will carry 27 containers of about 20 tonnes. The trip to the Bangladesh border covers nearly 783 kilometres in about seven days.

What It Means For You

  • Bogibeel's commercial start opens an inland export path for Assam methanol and other cargo.
  • IWAI officials say polymers, petroleum products, coal and tea-linked goods could follow.
  • Local farm products such as kaji nimbu and black pepper are also cited as future consignments.

What's Happening

  • Two cargo vessels, around 30 years old, are prepared for the first commercial sailing.
  • Each vessel is expected to move about 540 tonnes, for a combined 1,080 tonnes.
  • The port already has a customs office, jetty and warehouse, with a lighthouse still under construction.

Why Bogibeel matters for Assam trade

  • Poojan Kumar of IWAI said a full operational port would widen routes from Assam to foreign markets.
  • BusinessLine and HT both present the sailing as Dibrugarh's first such overseas cargo move since Independence.
  • During British rule the district was a major Brahmaputra trading centre, the reports note.
