12 ships report attacks near Hormuz in one week

BBC News··1d ago

Twelve vessels reported attacks near the Strait of Hormuz between 5 and 11 October, BBC Verify found from UKMTO data. That was the largest weekly total since the US-Israeli war with Iran began, after 10 ships the previous week. Six vessels were struck last Sunday. Four more attacks were reported so far this week. About 12.6 million barrels per day.

What It Means For You

  • Slower Middle East oil flows through Hormuz can feed into global crude pricing that Indian importers watch.
  • Indian seafarers remain among crews caught in strikes, as the Petro Dolphin rescue showed.
  • US Central Command said commercial traffic continues with co-ordinated protection from US forces and partners.

What's Happening

  • The container ship GFS Pride sank after a Tuesday strike in the strait; twenty-one crew were evacuated.
  • Iran's IRGC said the vessel carried 2,500 containers of contraband on an unauthorised route.
  • Assisted US Navy transits in the first 10 days of October were up 85 percent versus the same August period.

How Oil Flows Are Being Rerouted

  • Pre-war baseline flows through the strait were about 17 million barrels per day, Kpler data shows.
  • Shuttle tankers load in the Gulf then transfer cargo in the Gulf of Oman along routes near Oman.
  • Iran calls that coastal route unauthorised and wants vessels closer to its own shore.
