CERT-In warns Chrome users to install a high-risk patch

Times of India··17 Aug

CERT-In issued a high-severity advisory for desktop Chrome on Windows, macOS and Linux. Builds before 151.0.7922.137 or .138 on Windows and macOS, and before 151.0.7922.137 on Linux, are affected. Attackers could run code or read data if a user opens a crafted page. Google has released a patch. Users should update and relaunch.

What It Means For You

  • If you use Chrome on a Windows, Mac or Linux computer, open Help then About Google Chrome and install any pending update.
  • Anyone on a build older than 151.0.7922.137 (or .138 on Windows and macOS) is in the versions CERT-In listed as affected.
  • If you manage office browsers, the same advisory applies to enterprise desktops, not only home users.

What's Happening

  • CERT-In published a high-severity note on multiple Chrome vulnerabilities in mid-August 2026.
  • Google has issued patched desktop builds; users must often trigger the update manually.
  • Exploitation is described as visiting a crafted webpage or clicking a malicious link.

What A Use-After-Free Bug Does In A Browser

  • Use-after-free means the browser reuses memory that was already released, which can let crafted content run unintended code.
  • V8 is Chrome's JavaScript engine; Blink is its rendering engine; both were named in the advisory.
  • Relaunching after the About page download is required for the new version to replace the running process.
