CJI says court must stay clear of politics
Hindustan Times··18h ago
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said on Monday the Supreme Court should not be dragged into politics or become a site of disruption. He told SCBA president Pradeep Rai lawyers may protest at designated places, but court work and movement of staff and litigants must stay clear. He agreed to list a fresh SCBA petition while repeating that appeal.

What It Means For You
- A special bench on Sunday directed that metro and railway services operate normally and that internet connectivity remain undisturbed around the protests.
- That bench also said restrictions around court complexes should be removed so litigants can reach hearings.
- The CJI said democratic protest is fine if it does not block access to the court.
What's Happening
- Rai mentioned a petition on detention of lawyers and internet suspension; Gopal Sankaranarayanan mentioned a separate police-action plea.
- Sankaranarayanan said no public Section 163 BNSS prohibitory order was available and alleged senior lawyers were manhandled.
- The CJI declined to comment further on those allegations at this stage.
Link To The Opposition March
- The remarks came as the Opposition prepared to march toward the Supreme Court after the CJI declined a meeting sought by Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi.
- Related issues were already pending before the court in its judicial capacity, the report said.
- Sunday's directions came from a bench of Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana.
