New Zealand opens 6-month graduate work visa

New Zealand will introduce a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa from November 16, 2026, lasting six months. Applicants need an NZQCF Level 5, 6 or 7 qualification studied full-time for at least 24 weeks, plus NZD 5,000 in funds. The visa can be granted only once and cannot be extended. Some Level 7 Graduate Diploma Post-Study rules also widen that day.

What It Means For You
- Eligible graduates can work for any employer for up to six months without a job offer first.
- Applicants apply within three months after their New Zealand student visa expires.
- English-language, foundation and bridging qualifications do not qualify for the new route.
What's Happening
- Immigration New Zealand dated the announcement September 10 for the November 16, 2026 start.
- The route targets graduates who do not already qualify for the Post-Study Work Visa.
- From the same date, some Level 7 Graduate Diploma holders with a bachelor's degree can get Post-Study Work rights.
How the two graduate visas differ
- The short-term visa lasts a maximum of six months and cannot be extended.
- Post-Study Work Visa length still depends on the qualification, including up to three years for eligible Master's graduates.
- From November 16, Post-Study applications can also go through the ADEPT online system.
