NSE derivatives turnover hits Rs 34.48 lakh crore low
The Economic Times··2 Sept
NSE's total monthly equity derivative turnover was Rs 34.48 lakh crore in August, the lowest since November 2023, The Economic Times reported. BSE's August turnover stood at Rs 32.2 crore, the lowest since June 2025. Rajesh Palviya of Axis Securities said the decline largely reflects behavioural changes triggered by the closing auction session running from 3.15 pm to 3.35 pm.

What It Means For You
- Brokers are squaring off positions earlier by 3.05 to 3.10 pm since CAS began.
- Sebi Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey said last week he envisages no changes to the mechanism.
- Many traders urged Sebi to roll back CAS over settlement price uncertainty.
What's Happening
- CAS collects buy and sell orders then matches them for a single official closing price.
- Palviya said algos and arbitrageurs are staying away from the CAS window rather than risk losses.
- Anand Rathi's Mehul Kothari said the expiry-day structure shift reduced short-term speculative activity.
What Traders Say About CAS
- Participants opposed CAS saying it creates uncertainty between live and settlement prices.
- Large orders in thin volumes can move prices sharply at 3.15 pm versus 3.30 pm.
- Lower market volatility and a range-bound market also reduced derivatives turnover, Kothari said.
