India plans Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet trains for 2027
The Indian Express··6d ago
India plans to start the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor in 2027 using domestically made rolling stock, an IHRA representative said. He said the line is a 500-kilometre alignment being built for the first time in India. A July joint declaration mentioned Japan's E10 series for the early 2030s. He said station-area development is also under way along the route.

What It Means For You
- Officials plan to commission a priority section first before fuller corridor operations.
- The representative said passenger trips would cover 500 km in two hours once the service runs reliably.
- He said training, trials and signalling work are as important as rolling-stock procurement.
What's Happening
- In February, India announced seven more high-speed rail projects beyond the first corridor.
- Discussions continue on Japanese rolling stock and signalling systems for the line.
- The project was agreed between Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Abe in December 2015.
Japan's Timeline Benchmark
- Japan opened its first high-speed rail in 1964 and has 62 years of operating experience.
- The representative said even Japan could not finish a new 500 km high-speed line in 10 years today.
- IHRA was established in 2014 and has discussed the Indian project with stakeholders since then.
