Hindustan Times··4d ago
The Madras High Court on Tuesday upheld Speaker JCD Prabhakar's acceptance of resignations by six AIADMK MLAs. The six had resigned and joined Chief Minister Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. Chief Justice SA Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan held the resignations were genuine. The court told the Speaker to finish pending disqualification proceedings within two months.

What It Means For You
- Acceptance of the resignations stands, so the vacancies created by the exits remain in place for now.
- Disqualification proceedings continue and are not barred by the resignations, the Bench said.
- The Speaker has a two-month deadline to decide those disqualification pleas.
What's Happening
- AIADMK Whip Agri Krishnamurthy and NPPP leader Ravi had sought to quash the Speaker's acceptance order.
- Petitioners said resignations were accepted without proper inquiry while disqualification pleas were pending.
- The MLAs are Maragatham Kumaravel, Sathyabama, Isakki Subbaiah, Jayakumar, MR Vijayabhaskar and C Vijayabhaskar.
How The Dispute Began
- A disqualification plea alleged the six voted for the TVK government against the party whip.
- The court said no roving inquiry into motives was required once resignations were found genuine.
- Hindustan Times noted the Supreme Court had earlier declined to interfere with related Speaker steps.
