Messi statue removal enters Bengal political backdrop

The Lake Town statue was backed by Sree Bhumi Sporting Club and former TMC minister Sujit Bose, and was virtually inaugurated during Messi's December 2025 GOAT India Tour. Its removal followed safety complaints, but it also came after the BJP replaced the TMC government and earlier removed another football-themed sculpture in Bengal's changed political moment.
