Cabinet clears Rs 1,86,405 crore green corridor
The Indian Express··30 Sept
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved Green Energy Corridor Phase-III with a total outlay of Rs 1,86,405 crore. The scheme targets evacuation of up to 135 GW of renewable energy across states by 2032-33. It allocates Rs 1,36,378 crore for intra-state transmission and Rs 50,000 crore for 50 GWh of battery storage. Central financial support is Rs 54,082 crore.

What It Means For You
- Central aid is meant to offset intra-state transmission charges that feed into power tariffs.
- Battery storage in the plan is intended to cut peak-hour curtailment of solar power.
- State transmission utilities will run the scheme, with greenfield lines bid competitively.
What's Happening
- GEC-III is the first Green Energy Corridor phase with a dedicated battery storage component.
- About 21 GW of renewables still move on temporary grid links while dedicated lines catch up.
- During April-June, grid operators curtailed 8,133 GWh of solar output, MNRE told Parliament.
Why the corridor matters
- India's renewable peak curtailment has grown as capacity outpaced transmission build-out.
- GEC Phase-I covered eight states; Phase-II targets seven states with thousands of circuit km.
- The Cabinet statement links the scheme to a 900 GW non-fossil capacity goal by 2035.
