Census 2027 self-count opens in snow-bound areas

Self-enumeration for Census 2027 began on 17 August in Ladakh and snow-bound parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Residents can file online until 31 August on the official census portal. House-to-house counting in these areas runs from 1 to 30 September. The rest of the country will be counted in February 2027.

What It Means For You
- If you live in Ladakh or a notified snow-bound village, self-enumeration is open from 17 to 31 August 2026 on the census portal.
- You will be asked 40 questions, including caste as you declare it, plus identity numbers only if you have them.
- The portal is geofenced, so a resident who is currently in the plains cannot file for a snow-bound household from there.
What's Happening
- Population Enumeration, the second phase of Census 2027, opened with self-enumeration on 17 August 2026 in selected high-altitude areas.
- Door-to-door counting in those areas is scheduled from 1 to 30 September 2026, with 1 October 2026 as the reference date.
- The rest of India, including the plains of Jammu and Kashmir, is scheduled for February 2027.
How Caste And Identity Fields Will Be Recorded
- Census 2011 had 29 questions; the 2027 schedule adds 13 fields, including caste for groups other than SC and ST.
- Ladakh is to be the first Union Territory to complete the full Census 2027 count by the end of September.
- Officials said more than 6.67 lakh households in J and K and 7009 in Ladakh had already used self-enumeration in the earlier houselisting phase.
