Congress asks Centre to review E20 petrol policy

On 21 August 2026, Congress communications chief Jairam Ramesh asked for an immediate review of the Centre's E20 policy and for non-ethanol petrol to remain available at pumps. E20 is petrol blended with 20 percent ethanol. He said the party would not accept a fuel policy that raises both vehicle running costs and kitchen expenses.

What E20 Changes At The Pump And In The Field
- E20 means 20 percent ethanol mixed into petrol. Older engines may need different seals and can return lower kilometres per litre, which is the compatibility issue parties are arguing.
- India's ethanol programme uses sugarcane juice, molasses and grains such as maize. Diverting those crops is the food-price channel Congress is naming.
- A CWC resolution is a party document. It does not repeal the blending mandate. Only the Centre can change what oil companies are required to sell.
