Supreme Court refuses urgent hearing on Central Park shutdown

The Hindu··1d ago

The Supreme Court on Friday refused an urgent hearing on a plea against the NDMC order shutting Central Park. A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi declined the plea. Justice Bagchi said shopkeepers earn livelihoods during these days and entire families face hardship. The NDMC shut the park late Thursday night ahead of a Cockroach Janta.

What It Means For You

  • Central Park stays closed under the NDMC order while the Court waits to list the plea later this month.
  • Shopkeepers around Connaught Place continue trading under the shutdown of the park itself.
  • Any later finding of disproportionate measures could bring constitutional or compensation claims, the bench said.

What's Happening

  • CJP leader Abhijeet Dipke called patriots to gather with the national flag at Central Park on Friday.
  • Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were sent to five-day judicial custody and lodged in Tihar Jail.
  • They were accused of violating peace bonds and trespassing into Jantar Mantar, which has been denotified as a protest area.

How The Park Closure Landed In Court

  • A lawyer told the Court the NDMC shut Central Park late on October 15, preventing trade there.
  • Justice Bagchi said protest rights, peanut sellers and law-and-order concerns were interconnected.
  • The Court said it could exercise constitutional jurisdiction if business losses followed.
