FRRO tells Imran Khan to leave India by 28 October

Hindustan Times··2d ago

Mumbai's Foreigners Regional Registration Office directed actor Imran Khan, an American Overseas Citizen of India cardholder, to leave India by October 28. BJP leader Kirit Somaiya complained after Khan joined an October 10 protest at August Kranti Maidan seeking chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation. Police said permission was not obtained for the gathering at the venue.

What It Means For You

  • OCI status does not confer Indian citizenship or a free hand to join political protests.
  • A Leave India notice sets a hard exit date; staying past it is an immigration breach.
  • Complaints about foreign nationals at unauthorised rallies can move from local police to the FRRO.

What's Happening

  • Khan was among hundreds detained during the Cockroach Janata Party-linked protest on October 10.
  • Somaiya alleged OCI and visa violations and pressed for deportation after the demonstration.
  • The FRRO notice followed the police referral of Somaiya's complaint to immigration authorities.

What OCI Status Allows

  • OCI cardholders get residency and travel privileges but remain foreign citizens under Indian law.
  • The FRRO regulates registration, stay, departure and visa extensions for foreign nationals.
  • Khan said he attended as a Mumbai resident, not as a representative of any political organisation.
