The Hindu··2d ago
The Ministry of Home Affairs demography panel launched a portal for citizens, NGOs and governments to submit input on demographic changes, preferably after 2011. The site at demography.mha.gov.in seeks mobile numbers, addresses and consent for data processing. The High-Level Committee on Demographic Changes chaired by retired Supreme Court judge Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar was formed on May 26, 2026.

What It Means For You
- Residents can file observations that may feed into national policy recommendations on immigration enforcement.
- Submitters must share contact details and consent to government use of their data.
- Recommendations could influence how states report religion-wise enrolment and identity data.
What's Happening
- The portal says changes stem from illegal immigration, irregular mobility and administrative laxity rather than normal fertility trends.
- Categories include ministries, states, civil society groups and individual citizens.
- Questions cover impacts on employment, healthcare, housing and social harmony.
The Demography Panel Mandate
- On September 28 the panel sent states a 35-point religion-wise questionnaire on demographic trends.
- It asked about unusual Aadhaar, voter and ration card increases.
- The committee was set up on May 26, 2026 under Justice Naolekar.
