What It Means For You

  • The craft is built to detect and counter submarine threats in shallow and coastal waters where larger warships face limits.
  • Besides anti-submarine work, it can do underwater surveillance, low-intensity maritime operations and mine warfare tasks.
  • Three diesel engines and waterjet propulsion are meant to keep the hull manoeuvrable near the coast.

What's Happening

  • Sensors and weapons listed include Abhay hull-mounted sonar, lightweight torpedoes, an indigenous anti-submarine rocket launcher and the Mareech Advanced Torpedo Decoy System.
  • The delivery protocol on August 22 was signed by CSL Director (Operations) Harikrishnan S. and Commander U. Sharan Kumar, Commanding Officer (Designate).
  • The Navy said the ship can operate with maritime patrol aircraft, helicopters and other warships.

Name And Lineage

  • The ship is named after Mangrol, a fishing harbour town in Gujarat's Junagadh district.
  • It continues the name of the erstwhile INS Mangrol (M85), a minesweeper that served until April 7, 2004.
  • Eight ASW shallow water craft are planned under the CSL programme; Mangrol is the third delivered.
